Book a consultation

What is a babywearing consultation?

It's a chance to spend time with a trained babywearing consultant to learn more about slings, carriers and babywearing.

My consultations last 1 hour and priced on a sliding scale to support accessibility and affordability. During the session we will discuss your circumstances and needs which will then lead us into either;

  • Demoing different types of carriers and offering you chance to explore different carrying options

  • Build confidence with carrying, including learning a new skill or trying out a new carrier.

What's included?

The standard 1 hour consultation covers;

  • 1-2-1 Support from a Slingababy trained babywearing consultant

  • 1 month hire of a carrier, stretchy wrap or woven

  • Travel within a 5 mile radius of my home to your home or chosen location. Travel outside of this radius can be arranged on a per mile basis.

How much does it cost?

I believe carrying children is a gift and ability to pay shouldn't prevent anyone from learning.

With this in mind I offer consultations on a sliding scale to make them affordable and accessible whilst also covering my costs and time.

Consultation sliding scale payments;

  • £20 - Supported fee. This level does not cover running costs but is supported through the Held Babywearing Solidarity Fund to make babywearing more accessible.

    Choose this option if; you may struggle to meet basic needs and paying for this consultation would be a significant hardship.

  • £35 - Standard fee. This covers my time at minimum wage, carrier hire costs and insurance.

    Choose this option if; you are able to meet your basic needs but have little-to-no disposable income. Paying for this consultation may qualify as a sacrifice but it would not create hardship.

  • £50 - Solidarity fee. Payment at this level contributes to the Held Babywearing Solidarity Fund which offers supported and free consultations to those who need them.

    Choose this option if; you are comfortably able to meet all of your basic needs and have disposable income. Paying for this consultation would not be a sacrifice or hardship.

Thanks to

Worts & Cunning Apothecary for the explanation and graphic on sliding scale payments.

If you aren't sure which payment level is right for you, see the Green Bottle explanation from Worts & Cunning Apothecary below. There is no judgement in which payment level you choose. I trust you to make the best decision for your circumstances whilst also understanding the running costs of this service.

If these payment levels are a barrier please get in touch as I may be able to offer further subsidies through the Solidarity Fund. Coming to a sling library session is also a more affordable way to get support.

Babywearing consultation FAQs

What does a babywearing consultation look like?

  • The session will be tailored to your family's needs. Before we meet I'll send you a short questionnaire to gather some basic information and help me plan the session. To give you an idea of what to expect a typical 60 minute babywearing consultation will look something like;

  • Welcome; we'll have a chat about why you've booked the consultation and what you are hoping to get from the session.

  • Explore, demo, learn; in an hour long session we will have the opportunity to either;

    • Explore - I have a range of different slings in my mini-library. If you are overwhelmed by all the different types and brands I can bring a selection of slings, carriers and wraps so you can see and touch them to explore which ones might work for you.

    • Demo - I can demonstrate a maximum of three different slings, carriers or wovens to give you an idea of how they work and different ways of carrying

    • Learn - I would suggest learning one skill per session; if you are new to slings this would likely be a front carry. More advanced skills such as back carrying or tandem carrying may take a couple of sessions if you are new to carrying.

Who is the babywearing consultant?
  • Your consultation will be with Emma Woods, Slingababy babywearing consultant. You can find out more in the about me section.

Where's included in the 5 mile travel radius?
  • Travel within 5 miles of my home in Barlow, S18 is included in the service fees. For consultations outside of this area please get in touch to discuss additional travel costs.

Why do you offer sliding scale payments?

  • Babywearing has been such a gift to my family that I'm passionate about sharing babywearing knowledge with carers and families that would like to learn this beautiful skill. I know affordability can be a barrier and babywearing should not be limited to only those that can afford it.

    In line with economic justice principles, sliding scale payments empower families to choose the right payment level that suits their circumstances whilst allowing me to set limits to cover the costs involved in running the service. There is no judgement in which payment level you choose; I trust you to make the best decision for you family whilst respecting the service I offer and my time.

Do you offer free babywearing consultations?
  • In exceptional circumstances I may be able to offer discounted or free consultations if there are sufficient funds in the Held Babywearing Solidarity Fund. Please get in touch to discuss.

    Sling libraries are an affordable way to learn more about slings, get fit checks and meet other babywearers. See here for more information on sling libraries.
